Thailand just made Architectural Digest's list of best countries to live in for 2026. The magazine highlighted Thailand as one of the world's top spots for design lovers.
Architectural Digest published the feature on their website, saying the best countries combine "awe-inspiring architecture, innovative urban planning" and other design elements that make them stand out.
Here's the thing — this isn't just about pretty buildings. When international magazines like AD spotlight Thailand for livability, it usually means more expats and digital nomads start looking seriously at moving here. That typically drives up rent prices in popular areas like Bangkok's Sukhumvit or Chiang Mai's Nimman.
What this means for travelers
Thailand's been getting more recognition lately for design and architecture. You see it everywhere — from the new terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport to boutique hotels in places like Koh Samui that actually look different from the standard beachfront resort.
The urban planning part is interesting too. Bangkok's BTS and MRT expansions, plus the way newer developments integrate green spaces, probably caught AD's attention. Even smaller cities like Chiang Mai have been rethinking walkability and public spaces.
For what it's worth, I've noticed more architecture-focused tours popping up in Bangkok and even Phuket. There's clearly growing interest in Thailand beyond just beaches and temples.
The design scene
If you're into architecture and design, Thailand's got some solid stuff happening:
- Bangkok has everything from Jim Thompson's traditional Thai house to ultra-modern skyscrapers like MahaNakhon
- Chiang Mai blends Lanna architecture with contemporary design in places like the new Central Festival mall
- Even beach destinations are getting more design-conscious — look at some of the newer resorts in Koh Phangan or Krabi
The local design scene is legit too. Thai architects and designers are getting international recognition, which probably influenced AD's decision.
That said, "best country to live in" depends heavily on your budget and visa situation. Thailand's great for medium to long-term stays, but the visa runs and bureaucracy are still real considerations for anyone thinking about actually living here.
Still, it's cool to see Thailand getting recognized for something beyond just being a budget travel destination. The design and architecture scene here has been quietly getting better for years.
