Quentin Griffiths, the 58-year-old co-founder of UK fashion giant ASOS, died after falling from a 17th-floor balcony in Pattaya. Thai police believe he took his own life.
The incident happened at a high-rise building in Pattaya. Police found the room locked from the inside when they arrived, which led them to rule out foul play.
According to investigators, Griffiths was facing ongoing legal cases and criminal prosecutions back in the UK. Police cited these legal troubles as the likely motive for his death.
What we know
Griffiths co-founded ASOS, which became one of the UK's biggest online fashion retailers. The company started in 2000 and grew into a global brand worth billions.
Thai police haven't released details about the specific legal cases Griffiths was facing in the UK. They also haven't said how long he'd been staying in Pattaya or what brought him to Thailand.
The investigation is ongoing, but police say they're treating this as a suicide based on the evidence they've found so far.
Pattaya incidents
This isn't the first time a foreign national has died in a high-rise incident in Pattaya. The city sees several cases each year involving foreigners falling from buildings, with many involving people facing personal or financial problems.
Pattaya's high-rise condos and hotels are popular with expats and long-term visitors, but these incidents highlight the importance of mental health support for foreigners living or staying in Thailand.
If you're struggling with mental health issues while in Thailand, the Samaritans of Thailand offers support in English. You can reach them at 02-713-3120.
