Phuket vs Koh Samui: Thailand's Two Resort Islands Compared (2026)
Phuket has more options and cheaper flights. Samui feels more intimate but costs more to reach. Here's the real breakdown — prices, beaches, nightlife, and which one fits your trip.
Phuket vs Koh Samui: Thailand's Two Resort Islands Compared (2026)
Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on Koh Samui's airport. That single fact means flights to Samui cost ฿3,000-5,000 from Bangkok, while Phuket — with a dozen airlines competing — runs ฿1,500-2,500 for the same route. Before you've even checked into a hotel, Phuket is already cheaper.
But cheaper doesn't always mean better. These are Thailand's two biggest resort islands, and they serve different types of trips.
Quick Verdict
Phuket is bigger, has more variety, and is easier to reach. It ranges from party chaos (Patong) to genuine quiet (Nai Harn). More beaches, more restaurants, more everything — including more tourists.
Koh Samui is smaller, more contained, and feels more like an island. It's pricier to reach but the resort quality at mid-range is arguably better. Less variety, more cohesion.
Families and resort travelers: either works, but Samui feels more manageable. Nightlife seekers: Phuket, no contest. Budget travelers: Phuket, because of flights alone.
The Numbers
| Phuket | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Budget traveler/day | ฿1,800-2,000 ($51-57) | ฿1,500-2,000 ($43-57) |
| Mid-range traveler/day | ฿4,000-4,500 ($114-129) | ฿3,500-5,000 ($100-143) |
| Hostel dorm | ฿350-560/night | ฿300-500/night |
| Budget guesthouse | ฿400-1,200/night | ฿600-1,200/night |
| Mid-range hotel | ฿2,000-3,000/night | ฿2,000-3,500/night |
| Street food meal | ฿60-150 | ฿60-120 |
| Restaurant meal | ฿400-600 | ฿250-500 |
| Beer (7-Eleven / bar) | ฿60 / ฿100-180 | ฿60 / ฿120-180 |
| Flight from Bangkok | ฿1,500-2,500 | ฿3,000-5,000 |
Interesting pattern: daily costs are roughly similar once you're there. The real gap is in getting there. Phuket flights save you ฿1,500-2,500 per person each way. For a couple, that's ฿6,000-10,000 before you even arrive.

The Vibe
Phuket is not one place — it's at least five different experiences depending on where you stay:
- Patong: the famous one. Bangla Road, go-go bars, tuk-tuk drivers quoting ฿400 for a 2km ride. Travelers either love or hate this. Mostly hate, based on trip reports.
- Kata/Karon: more family-oriented, calmer beaches, still developed.
- Old Town: Sino-Portuguese architecture, street art, local food scene. Trip reports consistently call this the most underrated part of Phuket.
- Rawai/Nai Harn: quieter south end. The beach at Nai Harn is consistently rated Phuket's best.
- Kamala/Surin: upscale, peaceful, resort-heavy.
Koh Samui is simpler:
- Chaweng: the main beach. Developed, sometimes compared to a smaller Patong. Not as intense, but the same energy.
- Lamai: slightly quieter version of Chaweng.
- Bophut/Maenam: the north coast. Calmer, better value, Friday night market at Fisherman's Village.
- West/South coast: genuinely quiet. Lipa Noi has sunset views and almost no tourists.
The Reddit consensus: Phuket has higher highs and lower lows. Samui is more consistent.
What to Do
Phuket
- Phi Phi Islands day trip — ฿1,500-2,500. Yes, it's touristy. Still worth it once.
- Old Town walking — free. Street art, Sino-Portuguese shophouses, local coffee shops. Half a day well spent.
- Similan Islands (November-April only) — ฿3,000-4,500 day trip. Some of the best diving/snorkeling in Thailand.
- Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island) — ฿1,500-3,000 by longtail or speedboat.
- Big Buddha viewpoint — free. The views are the real draw, not the statue.
Koh Samui
- Ang Thong Marine Park — ฿1,500-2,500. The signature day trip. Kayaking, hiking, emerald lagoon.
- Fisherman's Village night market (Friday) — free entry, food from ฿40-80 per dish. Best night market on the island.
- Koh Tao day trip — ฿1,500-2,000 for snorkeling. Better visibility than around Samui.
- Namuang Waterfalls — free. Easy access, good swimming.
- Lamai Sunday night market — smaller than Fisherman's Village but more local.
Phuket has more variety in activities. Samui's are solid but you'll run through them faster on a longer trip.

Where to Stay
Phuket
- Budget: Lub d Phuket Patong from ฿700/night. Pool, social vibe, if Patong is your thing.
- Mid-range: Old Town boutique hotels from ฿1,500-2,500/night. Better value and more character than Patong at the same price.
- Splurge: Nai Harn beachfront resorts from ฿5,000/night. Best beach, least chaos.

Koh Samui
- Budget: Guesthouses in Maenam from ฿600-800/night. Fan room, near the beach, quiet.
- Mid-range: Bophut boutique hotels from ฿2,000-3,000/night. Pool, breakfast, walking distance to Fisherman's Village.
- Splurge: Luxury resorts (west coast) from ฿6,000/night. Samui's luxury tier competes with anywhere in Southeast Asia.

Getting There
| Route | Phuket | Koh Samui |
|---|---|---|
| From Bangkok (flight) | ฿1,500-2,500, 1.5 hours, 10+ airlines | ฿3,000-5,000, 1 hour, Bangkok Airways only |
| From Chiang Mai (flight) | ฿1,500-2,000, 2 hours | ฿3,500-5,500, usually via Bangkok |
| International flights | Many direct from Asia, Australia, Europe | Limited — mostly via Bangkok |
| Between them | Ferry + bus: 6-8 hours, ฿800-1,200 |
The flight price gap is the single biggest cost difference between these two islands. If you're flexible, fly into Phuket and take the ferry/bus to Samui (or vice versa). That said, the 6-8 hour journey between them isn't trivial.
For international arrivals, Phuket wins easily. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Sydney, Hong Kong, and more. Samui's small airport limits your options.
🏨
The #1 Mistake
Defaulting to the most famous beach area on either island. Patong on Phuket and Chaweng on Samui are the most popular, most expensive, and most complained-about areas on their respective islands. Trip reports are full of travelers who booked Patong or Chaweng, had a mediocre experience, and only discovered the quieter areas too late.
The real move: stay outside the main tourist zone and visit the party areas for a night if you want. Not the other way around.
The Bottom Line
Day-to-day costs are similar between Phuket and Samui. The gap comes down to:
- Flights: Phuket saves ฿3,000-5,000 per person round-trip
- Variety: Phuket has more beaches, more areas, more activities, more restaurants
- Feel: Samui is smaller, more intimate, easier to navigate
- Nightlife: Phuket (Bangla Road) is bigger; Samui (Chaweng) is more contained
- Luxury tier: Both are excellent, slight edge to Samui for boutique resorts
For a couple flying from Bangkok, the flight difference alone is ฿6,000-10,000 — that's 2-3 extra nights of mid-range accommodation.
Phuket makes more sense for most travelers: cheaper to reach, more to do, more flexibility. Samui makes sense if you specifically want a smaller, calmer island with strong resort infrastructure and don't mind paying more to get there.
