Koh Chang vs Koh Samui: Which Thai Island Fits Your Budget? (2025/2026)
Koh Chang or Koh Samui? Real 2025-2026 costs for both islands — accommodation, food, transport, activities. One costs 50-70% more per day. Here's which and why.
Koh Chang vs Koh Samui: Which Thai Island Fits Your Budget? (2025/2026)
Here's the thing nobody tells you about Koh Samui: a private company owns the airport. Bangkok Airways built it, Bangkok Airways runs it, and Bangkok Airways decides who flies in. That one fact explains almost everything about why Samui costs what it costs.
Koh Chang doesn't have an airport. You take a bus and a ferry. And that difference — a ฿3,000+ flight vs. a ฿700 bus-and-boat combo — sets the tone for every single thing you'll spend money on across both islands.
Based on current prices from travel cost trackers, booking sites, and recent traveler reports, here's what the two islands actually cost side by side.
The Numbers
| Koh Chang | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Budget traveler/day | ฿1,000–1,500 ($29–43) | ฿1,500–2,200 ($43–63) |
| Mid-range traveler/day | ฿2,000–3,500 ($57–100) | ฿3,500–5,700 ($100–163) |
| Getting there from Bangkok | ฿600–900 ($17–26) | ฿2,130–4,500 ($61–129) |
| Hostel dorm | ฿200–500/night | ฿350–840/night |
| Budget guesthouse | ฿300–700/night | ฿500–1,000/night |
| Mid-range hotel (AC, pool) | ฿800–2,000/night | ฿1,500–4,000/night |
| Street food meal | ฿50–120 | ฿50–120 |
| Restaurant meal | ฿150–350 | ฿250–500+ |
| Beer (7-Eleven / bar) | ฿60 / ฿100 | ฿60 / ฿150 |
| Songthaew ride | ฿50–150 | ฿50–200 |
| Grab available | No | Yes (limited) |
The gap isn't subtle. Mid-range travelers consistently report spending 50–70% more per day on Koh Samui — and that's before factoring in the flight.
Getting There: Where The Price Gap Starts
Koh Chang — Bus + Boat, Simple and Cheap
Bus from Bangkok's Eastern Terminal (Ekamai) to Trat: ฿200–350, about 5–6 hours. From Trat, a songthaew to Ao Thammachat pier, then the ferry across.
- Ferry: ฿80–120 per person, 30 minutes. Runs every hour from 06:30 to 18:30, more often during busy periods. No advance booking — just show up and pay cash at the pier.
- Bus + ferry combo packages: ฿600–900 total from Bangkok. Available through 12Go Asia or at Ekamai station.
One thing to note: the old Centerpoint ferry pier closed in mid-2024. All traffic now runs through the Ao Thammachat – Ao Sapparot route. If you're reading an older guide that mentions Centerpoint, ignore it.
Koh Samui — The Bangkok Airways Tax
Samui International Airport is privately owned by Bangkok Airways. They built it, they control it, and for the Bangkok route, they have a near-monopoly on scheduled flights. That's not editorial opinion — CAPA (Centre for Aviation) has written about this as "Southeast Asia's largest monopoly air route."
- Bangkok Airways direct (BKK–USM): ฿2,130–4,500+ one-way. One hour flight.
- Budget alternative: Fly AirAsia/Nok Air to Surat Thani (฿1,000–1,800) + ferry to Koh Samui (฿200–400) = ฿1,200–2,200 total. Adds 3–4 hours but saves ฿1,000–2,000.
The airport monopoly doesn't just affect the flight — it shapes the entire island economy. Everyone arriving by air has already paid a premium to get there. That spending mindset follows them through every hotel, restaurant, and taxi ride. The businesses know it, and they price accordingly.

Accommodation
Street food costs basically the same on every Thai island. Accommodation is where the islands diverge.
Koh Chang
| Tier | Price/Night | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Dorm bed | ฿200–500 | Basic hostels, fan cooled. Habitat Hostel from ฿350. |
| Budget bungalow | ฿300–700 | Fan rooms, some with shared bathroom. Lonely Beach has private rooms from ฿300. |
| Mid-range | ฿800–2,000 | AC room with pool access. This is the sweet spot — solid rooms for under ฿1,500. |
| 4-star | ฿2,000–4,500 | Resort-style, beachfront options. |
| Luxury | ฿4,000–10,000+ | Mercure Hideaway-level. Sea view pool villas under ฿10,000. |
The sweet spot on Koh Chang is ฿800–1,500/night. That gets you AC, private bathroom, and often pool access. Multiple travel guides and comparison sites flag this as where Koh Chang offers the best value relative to other Thai islands.
Koh Samui
| Tier | Price/Night | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel / budget | ฿350–840 | Basic but functional. Fewer options than Koh Chang at the bottom end. |
| Mid-range | ฿1,500–4,000 | AC hotel, pool, breakfast. The floor is roughly double Koh Chang's. |
| Luxury | ฿5,000–15,900+ | Samui has the highest concentration of luxury resorts in Thailand. |
The gap between mid-range on each island is where it hurts most. A solid AC room with a pool costs ฿800–1,200/night on Koh Chang. The equivalent on Koh Samui starts at ฿1,500 and easily hits ฿2,500+.
Multiple travel forums include reports of Samui hotels that cost ฿2,000/night five years ago now charging ฿6,000. Whether that's inflation or "opportunity pricing" depends on who you ask, but the trend across sources is consistent: Koh Samui accommodation prices have risen sharply.
Food
Street food prices are nearly identical — this is Thailand, and ฿50–80 pad thai exists on both islands. The gap shows up the moment you sit down in a restaurant.
Koh Chang
- Street food stalls: ฿20–50 per item
- Bamboo-chair street cafes: ฿80–120 per dish
- Beachside restaurants: ฿150–350 per meal
- Resort restaurants: from ฿450
- A proper dinner: ฿500–600 at most sit-down places
Koh Chang's food scene is Thai-heavy. Seafood BBQs on the beach at White Sand Beach. Budget plates for ฿50 at the family-run spots in Lonely Beach. The food court behind Morgan Restaurant in Kai Bae does solid pad thai and noodles for cheap.
Koh Samui
- Street food / night markets: ฿50–120 per dish
- Local Thai restaurant: ฿170–300
- Western restaurant: ฿400–850
- Daily food budget (budget tier): ฿500
- Daily food budget (mid-range): ฿1,000–1,200+
Koh Samui has far more variety — Italian, Indian, Mexican, Japanese, fine dining, fast food chains. But here's the trade-off that comes up in multiple traveler reports: small local Thai restaurants have largely been replaced by Western restaurants, especially around Chaweng and Lamai. You can still find cheap Thai food, but you have to look harder than on Koh Chang where it's everywhere.
Daily food comparison:
| Style | Koh Chang | Koh Samui |
|---|---|---|
| Street food only | ฿200–350 | ฿250–400 |
| Mix (street + restaurants) | ฿400–700 | ฿600–1,000 |
| Restaurants + drinks | ฿700–1,200 | ฿1,000–1,800 |

Getting Around the Island
Koh Chang — Songthaews and Scooters
Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run along the west coast. Fares are fixed and published:
- Ferry pier → White Sand Beach: ฿50
- Ferry pier → Lonely Beach: ฿100
- Ferry pier → Bangbao: ฿150
- White Sand → Kai Bae: ฿70
- After 10pm: add ฿50 to all fares
Solo travelers in an empty songthaew pay a 2-person minimum (double fare). Good to know.
Scooter rental: ฿150–400/day. But here's the warning that comes up in every Koh Chang transport guide: the road from Kai Bae south to Bangbao has steep hills and hairpin bends — described by one long-running local site as "a mini rollercoaster." The 'Big Hill' between Klong Son and White Sand Beach is another trouble spot. Scooter accidents on these stretches are common enough that the tourist police specifically warn about them. If you rent, check the brakes before you ride, and don't go when it's raining — the surface gets dangerously slippery.
No Grab. No metered taxis. Negotiate or take songthaews.
Koh Samui — More Options, Higher Prices
Koh Samui has Grab (works but limited — can't pick up at the airport), songthaews (฿50–200), taxis (no meters, negotiate everything), and car rental (฿800–1,500/day).
More options than Koh Chang, but the lack of metered taxis means you're always negotiating. Agree on a fare before getting in — overcharging is a consistent complaint.
Activities
Koh Chang — Nature-Focused, Cheaper
- Snorkeling day trip (Koh Wai, Koh Rang): ฿750–1,500
- Kayaking: ฿300–600
- Elephant sanctuary visit: ฿1,800–2,500
- Thai massage: ฿300–400
- Beaches: Free
- Klong Plu Waterfall: ฿200 park entry
Koh Chang's activity scene is quieter — trekking through the interior, kayaking the mangroves, snorkeling around the smaller islands. Prices are noticeably lower across the board.
Koh Samui — More Variety, Higher Cost
- Ang Thong Marine Park tour: ฿1,250–2,500 + ฿300 park entry
- Cooking class: ฿1,200–2,000
- Snorkeling half-day: ฿1,500–2,500
- Thai massage: ฿200–400 (street) / ฿1,000–3,500 (spa)
- ATV tours: ฿1,200–2,000
The Ang Thong Marine Park is genuinely worth it — kayaking, snorkeling, emerald lake, jungle viewpoints. Travelers consistently rate it as one of the best day trips in Thailand. That said, with the park entry fee, you're looking at ฿1,550–2,800 all-in. Book through GetYourGuide or directly at the pier.

Seasonal Pricing
Both islands follow the standard pattern — high season (November–March), shoulder, and green season. But there's a twist:
Koh Samui has the opposite rain pattern to the Andaman coast. Its wettest months are October–December, while Phuket and Krabi's rain hits May–October. This means November — peak season almost everywhere else — can still be rainy on Samui.
Christmas/New Year on both islands: +75–100% on accommodation, minimum stays common. Book months ahead.
Low season (June–September): 30–50% discounts on accommodation. Koh Chang gets afternoon showers but mornings are usually fine. Koh Samui is actually decent weather-wise from June–September.
The Honest Assessment
What Koh Samui Does Better
- Restaurant variety. If you want Italian, Indian, sushi, fine dining, or beach clubs — Samui has it. Koh Chang's food scene is good but Thai-dominant.
- Nightlife. Chaweng has proper clubs, beach bars, fire shows. Koh Chang has some reggae bars and that's about it.
- Convenience. Direct flights, Grab (sort of), shopping malls, hospitals, ATMs everywhere.
- Ang Thong Marine Park. One of Thailand's best day trips. No equivalent from Koh Chang.
- Luxury resorts. Samui has the highest concentration in Thailand. If money isn't an issue, the top-end experience is hard to beat.
What Koh Chang Does Better
- Value. Mid-range on Koh Chang (฿800–2,000/night) matches mid-range Koh Samui quality (฿1,500–4,000/night) at 40–60% of the price.
- Thai food scene. Cheap, authentic, everywhere. You don't have to hunt for it like on Samui.
- Fewer tourists, less development. Multiple comparison sites describe Koh Chang as "a couple of decades behind Samui in development." Whether that's a pro or con depends on what you're looking for.
- Getting there is cheap. ฿600–900 from Bangkok vs. ฿2,130–4,500 for Samui.
- Beaches feel less commercial. No beach clubs, no lounger rental hustlers. Just sand.
What Both Get Wrong
- Scooter safety. Koh Chang has dangerous hills; Koh Samui has dangerous drunk drivers. Both islands see regular tourist scooter injuries. Check brakes, wear a helmet, carry your IDP.
- No metered taxis. Neither island has reliable metered taxis. Negotiate everything.
The 10-Day Budget Breakdown
Here's what a 10-day trip actually costs at mid-range level, based on the prices above:
| Koh Chang | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there (return) | ฿1,400 | ฿4,260–9,000 |
| Accommodation (10 nights) | ฿12,000–15,000 | ฿20,000–35,000 |
| Food (10 days) | ฿5,000–7,000 | ฿7,000–12,000 |
| Transport (on island) | ฿1,000–2,000 | ฿2,000–4,000 |
| Activities | ฿3,000–5,000 | ฿5,000–8,000 |
| Total | ฿22,400–30,400 | ฿38,260–68,000 |
| Per day | ฿2,240–3,040 | ฿3,826–6,800 |
That's a ฿15,000–38,000 ($430–1,090) difference over 10 days. At mid-range. The gap is real.
Who Should Go Where
Go to Koh Chang if:
- Budget matters — you want a good Thai island experience without bleeding money
- You prefer local Thai food over international restaurants
- You don't need nightlife beyond a cold beer and a sunset
- You're coming from Bangkok and don't want to fly
- You want fewer tourists and less development
- 3–7 days of beaches, snorkeling, and jungle waterfalls sounds right
Go to Koh Samui if:
- You want the convenience of flying in directly
- Restaurant variety and nightlife are priorities
- Ang Thong Marine Park is on your list (it should be)
- You're doing a Gulf island loop (Samui → Phangan → Tao)
- Luxury resorts and spa experiences are what you're after
- Budget genuinely isn't the deciding factor
The Bottom Line
Koh Samui is a better island if money isn't a constraint — more to do, more to eat, more infrastructure, one of the best day trips in Thailand.
Koh Chang is a better deal. The beaches are just as good, the food is cheaper and more authentically Thai, and you'll spend 40–60% less per day for a comparable experience.
The question isn't which island is better. It's whether the Samui premium — ฿15,000–38,000+ over a 10-day trip — is worth it to you. For some travelers, absolutely. For most budget and mid-range travelers, Koh Chang delivers the same essentials for significantly less.
