Cambodia border scam operations could cost you ฿160,000 — here's what travelers need to know

The Royal Thai Navy just uncovered Chinese scam networks operating near the Cambodia border — and they're still targeting foreigners with fake job offers that can cost victims their life savings.

The scams work like this: networks near Thmor Da district in Cambodia lure people with promises of high-paying online work. Once there, victims get forced into running romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and fake investment schemes targeting people back home.

The real cost of falling for these scams

Victims typically lose way more than just their time. Based on similar cases:

  • Initial "travel costs" they ask you to cover: ฿15,000-25,000 ($430-715)
  • Passport "processing fees": ฿5,000-8,000 ($143-229)
  • What victims end up owing the network: ฿160,000+ ($4,600+)

That's not counting what you lose from your own accounts when they force you to scam others.

Red flags that save you money

Skip any job offer that:

  • Promises ฿80,000+ ($2,300+) monthly for "easy online work"
  • Wants you to travel to Cambodia border areas first
  • Asks for upfront payments for visas, travel, or training
  • Comes through social media DMs or dating apps
  • Won't do video calls or meet in person first

Especially sus: Job offers in Sihanoukville, Poipet, or anywhere near the Thai-Cambodia border advertising "digital marketing" or "customer service" roles.

Why this matters for Thailand travelers

These networks specifically target tourists and expats already in Thailand. They know you're away from your support network and might be running low on cash.

The Thai Navy says operations are "still active" despite crackdowns, which means they're adapting tactics. Recent victims report being contacted through:

  • Dating apps (Tinder, Bumble)
  • Facebook job groups
  • Instagram DMs
  • Even hostel bulletin boards

What to do if you get contacted

Don't engage. Block immediately.

If you're already talking to someone suspicious:

  • Never send money for "travel arrangements"
  • Don't share passport photos or personal documents
  • Meet only in public places in major Thai cities
  • Trust your gut — legitimate employers don't operate like this

If you're genuinely looking for work in Thailand, stick to proper channels like international companies with Bangkok offices, established teaching programs, or remote work for your home country employers.

The ฿160,000+ you save by avoiding these scams? That's a solid 2-3 month Thailand budget right there.
